This sidetrip brought back memories....

Last night when it really hit me that we would be passing through Birmingham on the way home, I asked Mark if we would have time for a little side trip. This side trip took us to Bessemer, Alabama, right off I-20/I-59, where Uncle Fred and Grandma used to live. We did have a little bit of time to spare and drove the mile and a half off the freeway to Leafwood Circle. As I started to recognize a lot of the route to Pherd's house, tears came to my eyes. Mark asked me once if I was okay, and I said nope. It brought back a lot of memories for me. It brought back vividly the night that Grandma woke me up at their house and asked me to drive Fred to the hospital. He was having gall bladder surgery that Monday, but the pain on Saturday was too great for even him to stand. So I drove him, in his Red Firebird, as fast as I could to the hospital. He never left that hospital. On September 30, 1991, he died of pancreatic cancer there. I miss him so much. I didn't realize just how much I missed him. Here are the pictures I managed to snap. It is still so beautiful there.

I realized it has been 17 years almost since he died....I thought I would be able to handle this side trip...thought it would bring back happy memories of him. It was nice to see that the family that lives there now has kids and the yard was strewn with kid toys...just as I picture he would have wanted it for his nieces and nephews.

Terry, don't feel bad, I had a hard time looking at the pictures too. But I am glad you took them and posted them. Hard to believe that much time has gone by seems like it was only yesterday we got the dreaded phone call. Yes, he would have wanted the toys and distractions in his yard and house, that was the kind of man he was, loved his nieces and nephew's a lot.

When do you get home? are you there yet???????
